4.3.2 Claims Need an Evidence Chain

Claims should be specific enough to verify and narrow enough to remain true. “Contains 60% GRS-certified recycled polyester in the shell” identifies the material, percentage, scheme and component. “Circular jacket” does not explain which circular pathway exists, what part of the product is covered or what evidence supports the statement. A strong evidence chain connects the claim to the calculation or criterion, the supplier or assessor record, the product version and the approval owner.

  • Specify the object of the claim: product, component, material, facility, service, or company.
  • State the relevant threshold, percentage, geography, timeframe, or lifecycle boundary.
  • Keep the evidence that supports the exact wording and product version.
  • Check whether a logo or label may be used and whether the certificate is current.
  • Explain limitations or conditions that could change the outcome, especially for recyclability and circularity claims.
