Case Example: SAITEX

SAITEX is a denim manufacturer that uses closed-water systems in denim production and finishing. The company reports that 98% of process water is recycled and 2% evaporated, creating a zero-discharge system. Its finishing processes also include technologies such as laser finishing, air drying and water recovery, which makes the case useful for discussing how finishing can reduce freshwater use, wastewater discharge and resource loss (SAITEX; Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, 2020).

Discussion questions:

What makes SAITEX a closed-loop finishing case?

Why is water recovery important in denim production?

How can finishing choices affect both environmental impact and product quality?

Which parts of this model could be realistic for smaller manufacturers?
