2.3.1 Viscose

Viscose is one of the oldest and most widely used regenerated cellulosic fibres. It is produced by dissolving cellulose, often from wood pulp, and regenerating it into fibres through wet spinning (Lenzing, n.d.-a; Textile Exchange, 2023).

Conventional viscose production can be chemically intensive and has historically raised environmental and health concerns. Cleaner viscose systems aim to recover and reuse chemicals, reduce emissions and improve water management. However, these improvements depend on the specific producer and facility.
