2.1.4 Designing with recycled content: opportunities and constraints

Designing with recycled content can help brands reduce reliance on virgin materials and communicate a clearer circularity story. Recycled textiles can meet many aesthetic and performance requirements, especially when designers understand the material’s properties and limitations from the start (Textile Exchange, 2025; Rutex, n.d.).

However, fibre quality may vary, colour may be less predictable, and material availability can depend on collection and sorting systems. Some recycled fibres may need to be blended with virgin fibres to achieve the required strength, softness or durability (Textile Exchange, 2025).
