Welcome — module orientation
Welcome — module orientation
- If circularity became the default rather than the exception, what would fashion look like?
- If the barriers to circularity are already known, what is really stopping fashion from changing?
- What if regulations and standards became the creative brief for better design instead of a compliance checklist?
- How much of a product's future is decided before the first fiber is even spun?
- What if every factory process was designed to eliminate waste instead of managing it?
- How do we design products that customers never really finish using?
- How would our business model change if circular design aimed not only to reduce waste and emissions, but to become regenerative — creating positive impact for materials, communities and ecosystems?
Chapter overview
Overall Learning objective
Course structure and syllabus
The Circular Design Strategies course is structured in seven chapters, each with a chapter overview, an assignment differentiated for VET (EQF 4), HEI (EQF 5) and professionals (EQF 6), a five-question quiz and a synthesis. Chapters 1–4 build the foundations: circular design principles, design approaches, circularity challenges, and regulation, standards and certification. Chapters 5–7 apply them across the value chain: upstream (the brief before production), midstream (manufacturing implementation) and downstream (value retention and recovery). A 15-question final quiz closes the module.
Tell us about yourself
- Diagnostic orientation activity (survey or short form) on role (VET / HEI / professional) and prior experience with sustainable materials.
Pre-survey (diagnostic assessment)
- Short pre-survey for baseline self-assessment of knowledge and confidence on circular design strategies
AT A GLANCE
Who this module is for: SME owners and managers, designers, product developers and sustainability staff in fashion, textiles and leather — plus VET learners (EQF 4), HEI students (EQF 5) and professionals (EQF 6).
What you will be able to do: apply circular design strategies across the whole value chain — upstream (materials, design, sourcing), midstream (manufacturing, BAT, smart production) and downstream (use, repair, resale, collection, recycling) — and translate EU regulation, standards and certification into concrete product decisions.
Time needed: ≈ 20 hours self-paced (15–35 h depending on your profile and how deep you go).
Certificate: proposed assessment = 100 points (chapter quizzes 35 · chapter assignments 35 · final knowledge quiz 30). Certificate issued at ≥ 60 points.
Workload at a glance: Ch1 ≈ 2.5–4 h · Ch2 ≈ 3–4.5 h · Ch3 ≈ 3–5 h · Ch4 ≈ 2.5–4 h · Ch5 ≈ 2.5–4 h · Ch6 ≈ 3–4 h · Ch7 ≈ 3–5 h · Final quiz ≈ 1 h.
