Welcome — module orientation
Welcome to Digital Tools and AI for Sustainable Fashion
Module overview
Who this module is for: SMEs and designers in fashion, textiles, leather and footwear (TCLF); fashion/apparel/accessories designers; product developers and production managers; VET learners and higher-education students (EQF levels 4–6).
What you will be able to do: After this module you can select and apply the right digital tool for a given sustainability problem along the value chain, from digital design and virtual prototyping, to on-demand manufacturing, AI-driven data intelligence, and traceability, and argue the business case for each choice.
Time needed: ≈ 20 hours self-paced (15–35 h depending on your profile and how deeply you complete the assignments); suggested pace 6–8 weeks at 2.5–3.5 h/week.
Certificate: proposed assessment = 100 points (chapter quizzes 30 · assignments 30 · final quiz 30 · industry case & field activity 10). Pass ≥ 70/100. Details in the module assessment pack.
Overall Learning Objective
Learners will be able to describe how digital design, virtual prototyping, digital manufacturing, data analytics, and traceability tools enable sustainable and circular fashion products, and to select the appropriate digital tool for a given sustainability problem along the value chain.
The module consists of six chapters.
Chapter 1 is a horizontal overview: it frames the sustainability crisis of the fashion system, maps the value chain, introduces the EU policy framework, and presents the digital toolbox that the following chapters explore vertically.
Chapters 2–4 follow the product creation flow, digital design, virtual prototyping, virtual fashion, and digital manufacturing technologies.
Chapters 5 and 6 follow the data flow, data analytics, machine learning, and sustainability reporting, traceability, transparency, and circularity. The module connects to the other FashionKIC modules on sustainability frameworks, manufacturing systems, and holistic slow fashion, which provide the domain foundations that this module digitalizes.
Before starting, tell us about yourself: your role (VET learner, higher-education student, professional), your sector (textile, clothing, leather, footwear), and your prior experience with the digital tools covered here (2D/3D CAD, 3D garment simulation, AI tools, data analysis, traceability systems). This orientation survey helps tailor examples and group work to the class profile.
If AI terms feel new, invest 2–3 hours first in two free courses that make this module easier:
(1) Elements of AI (University of Helsinki & MinnaLearn, free, what AI can and cannot do; https://www.elementsofai.com/
(2) Optional: AI For Everyone (DeepLearning.AI, audit free on Coursera), how to build an AI strategy in a company.
A short diagnostic pre-survey (10 self-assessment items, 5-point scale) measures baseline knowledge and confidence on: digital design tools, virtual prototyping, additive manufacturing, AI concepts, LCA and reporting, and traceability technologies. The same survey is repeated at the end of the module as a post-assessment to make learning gains visible.
