Chapter 6 — full chapter
Product and material recovery pathways
After collection and assessment, textiles may enter product-level or material-level pathways. Product-level pathways, including reuse, repair, refurbishment and remanufacturing, retain the product or some of its components in use. Material-level pathways process textiles into fibres, polymers or other secondary raw materials. The appropriate route depends on product condition, material composition, contamination, available infrastructure and the quality requirements of the receiving process. These pathways are examined in Sections 6.3 and 6.4.
Recovery performance indicators
The tool focuses on measurable recovery-system performance:
-
- quantity collected;
- proportion successfully sorted;
- proportion directed to product-level pathways;
- proportion directed to material recovery;
- rejected or contaminated fraction;
- recycling-process yield;
- destination traceability;
- quality of the recovered output.
