Chapter 6 — full chapter
Chapter 6 — Communication and Cultural Change
Chapter purpose
Chapters 1–5 focused on making individual claims, campaigns and stakeholder communication credible. This chapter looks at what happens over time. It explores how repeated communication, across campaigns, retail, internal channels and reporting, shapes what people in fashion consider normal, valuable and desirable, and how communicators can use that influence responsibly.
The chapter also brings the module together. Credible claims, avoiding greenwashing, clear stakeholder communication, meaningful participation and responsible campaign design are the building blocks. Applied consistently over time, they contribute to cultural change.
Chapter overview
Section 6.1 explains how communication shapes culture and introduces a simple framework, from message to culture, that runs through the chapter. Section 6.2 applies it to organisations and the wider industry, and 6.3 to communicating long-term transformation. Learners then carry out a Cultural Norm Audit (6.4), complete a quiz (6.5) and review the key takeaways (6.6).
Introduction
Sustainability challenges in the fashion industry cannot be solved through communication alone. They require innovation, collaboration, responsible business practices and supportive policy. However, communication plays an important role in helping people understand these challenges, engage with possible solutions and contribute to positive change.
Every conversation, campaign, report and story influences how sustainability is understood. Communication shapes awareness, builds trust, supports collaboration and helps create shared understanding across organisations, industries and society. When grounded in evidence and communicated with honesty and purpose, it can encourage informed decision-making and contribute to the long-term cultural shifts needed for a more sustainable fashion industry.
This chapter explores how communication can help shape understanding, encourage participation and support cultures of sustainability. It introduces practical approaches for developing messages that are audience-centred, credible and capable of supporting meaningful change over time.
